One way to fight the quarantine boredom is to get together with your friends online and make a viral video. There are many different types of viral videos and lots of ways to connect virtually. One of my favorite viral videos is the make-up brush or don’t rush challenge. In this challenge, you start without make-up and then block out the camera with a make-up brush, and when you come back you’re in full glam mode. I decided to do this with some girlfriends of mine, and it was an absolute blast! I asked people to participate and got a lot more than I expected and after putting it all together, the result was absolutely beautiful!
Viral videos are a fun way to interact with your friends virtually. I miss these people badly! The overall message of the make-up brush challenge is body positivity and doing what makes you feel beautiful. There are many other types of viral videos with positive messages you can do. Here are a few examples:
Harlem Shake
The Harlem Shake video phenomenon has been around for awhile. The video includes the first part of the song “Harlem Shake” by Baauer and features one person dancing for the first 15 seconds or so and then after the bass drops, the camera cuts to a whole group of people either in costume or outlandish clothes dancing erratically. A more detailed history can be found here. Hopefully, I can wrangle up a few people to do a Corona Virus themed Harlem Shake video.
Mannequin Challenge
In the mannequin challenge large groups of people standing frozen like mannequins while the camera moves around them. In most of the videos, the song Black Beatles is playing in the background. This is a fun video to test how still people can sit and see how creative you can be with the scenes.
Dance Challenge
Flossing is one of many dance challenge videos. Flossing means swinging the arms back to the front on each side of the body while moving the hips. It’s an incredibly fun dance. Other dance challenge videos include twerking, get up, and the whip and nae nae.
Cinnamon Challenge
Some viral videos are just bizarre or potentially painful. One such example is the cinnamon challenge. In the cinnamon challenge, a person is encouraged to eat a spoonful of ground cinnamon in less than 60 seconds without drinking anything. The results are hilarious as it sounds easy enough, but it’s actually quite painful.
The Bottle Flip Challenge
The bottle flip challenge originated years ago and is a fun game in which a bottle of water or some other drink is flipped 360° and lands facing straight up. There are a number of creative methods for doing so, and the videos are just fun to watch. Similar challenges include the bottle cap challenge in which a person removes a bottle cap and some creative way.
Ice Bucket Challenge
Some viral videos are meant for a bigger purpose such as a charity event or to raise awareness. The ice bucket challenge is one such example. This challenge was meant to raise awareness of ALS, a disease that causes nerve cells to break down.
It would take all day for me to list the number of ridiculous viral challenges online such as the salt and ice challenge, the condom challenge, the Kylie Jenner lip challenge, the list goes on and on. I like the challenges that have some kind of positive message. For instance, the make-up brush challenge which I took part in encourages body positivity and women feeling beautiful. If you’re creative you can come up with your own challenge. Think of a special skill, dance, or other type of activity that can be recorded on video and then uploaded through Tik Tok or YouTube. Create your own viral video and see how far it goes. It might be a fun way to break up the quarantine boredom. You can find a big list of fun, viral challenges here.
