Zero Waste Challenge Day 22: Toilet Paper

The third week of the Zero Waste Challenge begins with toilet paper! Some people believe you have to give up toilet paper altogether in order to go zero waste, but Kathryn stresses in her blog that that’s not the case. There are various brands that are more environmentally-friendly than others, and I can’t tell you how much I love my bidet! In fact, if I was going to encourage someone to go green in the loo, I would say, get a bidet. I feel so much cleaner with one, and I definitely use less toilet paper. In fact, some people use the bidet to clean themselves off and then dry with a regular towel. I’m not sure I’m willing to go to that length, but maybe if I’m living alone.

The problem with toilet paper is that it uses up so many trees, and we absolutely need them if we’re going to combat climate change. Trees are a precious resource, so we should be more mindful of our paper products and how much we use. Having the bidet helps, but also just using less toilet paper and switching to eco-friendly brands can make a big difference. Kathryn lists several of those brands in her blog.

It’s important to remember that we shouldn’t sacrifice hygiene and cleanliness in our mission for greener living. We can make small lifestyle changes like switching to toilet paper made of recycled paper or bamboo without having to give up our regular bathroom routine. I’m going to be mindful of how much toilet paper I use and see how much I can cut back. Eventually, I’ll buy one of those eco-friendly options listed in her blog to see how they compare in price, but in the meantime, I’ve got enough to last me for awhile.

Stay clean, folks!
